I Can’t Hear! What to Do If There’s No Sound on iPhone
Are you having problems with your iPhone’s audio? Do you hear no sound on iPhone devices no matter what you do? Looking to perform DIY solutions before spending for the repairs?
In fact, iPhone owners have already spent $14 billion since 2007 in repairs. It’s no secret that the repairs for iPhones are expensive and iPhone owners are looking for cheaper alternatives.
Below, we have a list of some things you can do on your own to fix this problem on your iPhone’s lack of sound.
1. Hard Reset
Hard reset your iPhone. This is one of the first things you should do if your iPhone is having problems with audio. Do note that you should check all the simple solutions first before doing this.
If you don’t know how to hard reset your phone, hold down your Sleep/Wake button and Home button at the same time. For an iPhone 7 and later versions, hold down the Volume Down button and Home button. Hold until the screen turns off and then the Apple logo appears.
After the Apple logo appears, you can release the buttons. That’s a hard reset for your device. Now, check if the problem remains or got fixed.
2. Reset Settings to Default Settings
If it’s still not working, you may have to bring your iPhone to default. This is one of the more painful ways to get your sounds back. By that, we mean it’s painful in that you lose your personalized settings.
If it’s one way to get sound back, why not take the sacrifice?
Go to your settings. Find the General settings and proceed to press Reset All Settings.
Do take note that this step will not affect your data, contacts, or media. With that, open up a song and listen for a sound. If you fixed the problem, get back to personalizing your settings again.
3. Check If the iPhone Is in Headphone Mode
Got no sound on your iPhone 6? There is a chance your earphones work but your speakers don’t. In this case, all you need to do is plug your earphones back in.
Listen for sound through the earphones. If it works, all the iPhone may need is to recognize that it isn’t connected to your earphones anymore. Unplug the earphones, turn up the volume, and check if the volume slider bar shows up without the text “headphones” on top.
To fix this problem, clean out your earphone jack. Use compressed air into the jack or use tweezers. Repeat the plug and unplug process until your sounds work fine.
4. Turn Off Bluetooth and Do Not Disturb
This works for users who use Bluetooth speakers or headsets. For this to work, your device has to unpair with the headset. Make sure to unpair it if it is.
Go to your iPhone’s Settings and hit Bluetooth for the Bluetooth menu. Toggle the Bluetooth switch off. Next, check for sound with a song or video.
If the sound is not working still, go to the Do Not Disturb menu and disable it.
5. Update Your iOS
The iPhone 7 and 8 have had hardware changes but that shouldn’t be a problem for an iPhone you’ve been using for a while. What you may need to do is to update your device to the latest iOS version. It’s one more way to troubleshoot this no sound problem.
Go to the General menu under Settings and look for Software Update. Is your iOS version updated to the latest one? If it isn’t, proceed with the latest update.
Check for sounds by playing a song on a music app.
6. Check Volume
Got no sound on the iPhone? Your problem could be as simple as having your volume at the lowest setting. Press your Volume Up button on the side of the device or use the volume slider to fix this.
This is a no-brainer but it’s one possible reason your speakers don’t seem to work. This is often a problem that happens by accident so don’t feel too embarrassed. If you keep your iPhone in your pocket, sitting or leaning a certain way could set the device to silent by accident.
7. Restore an Older iPhone Version
Did you know that Apple considers the iPhone 5 as a vintage device now? Yes, the iPhone 5 is an old piece now and Apple won’t likely take in any more repairs for it. Still, that doesn’t mean you can’t fix the problem yourself.
If you’re thinking you need to look for old parts and learn the way of iPhone restoration, that’s not what we mean by it. We simply mean that you go to Settings and click on iCloud. Go to Storage & Backup and pick a restoration point from your backups.
Note that media, photos, and contacts you added to your iPhone after you backed it up before will get lost.
8. Clean Speakers from Debris
Still no sound on your iPhone 7? One reason your speakers are not working might be because of the dirt and dust in them. Get ready to do some serious elbow grease for this solution.
In that case, get a brush with soft bristles. If your iPhone is in a protective phone case, check to see if it blocks the speaker. For a more meticulous clean-out, take your iPhone out of the case or bumper.
With care, brush debris from the speaker. You may also want to clear out the receiver mesh and the lightning connector while you’re on the job. If you want, you can also use rubbing alcohol or acetone.
9. Check Your Mute Switch
There is a mute switch on the upper left-hand side of your iPhone. It’s a manual hardware switch to turn your sounds on and off. Look for a strip of color by the switch.
If it’s orange, that means that your phone is in mute or silent mode. To fix this, flick the switch to set it out of silent mode. To make sure it’s audible, turn up your volume.
10. Hire a Repair Service
Did your phone get wet? For problems like this, you will need more than rice and self-troubleshooting. You need a professional to look into how your device is doing.
